Introducing a new feature: The Pilsen Ticket—a cost-effective alternative to paper tickets

Starting on August 1 of this year, we will begin selling a new product called the Pilsen Ticket. It is a prepaid plastic card designed primarily for passengers who wish to continue purchasing single-ride tickets with cash, while also taking advantage of modern electronic ticketing. The Pilsen Ticket is a simple, reusable card that allows passengers to conveniently purchase single-ride tickets directly on public transit vehicles via fare terminals.
 

How does the Pilsen Ticket work?

Upon purchase, the card will contain a credit of 100 transport points, worth 100 CZK, intended for purchasing single-ride tickets on public transit vehicles. The retail price will be 120 CZK, with 20 CZK representing a refundable contribution toward the cost of the card. Once the travel points are depleted, the card can be reloaded with additional points via the Pilsenská karta e-shop or at sales locations.
 
The Pilsen Ticket will be available starting August 1 at PMDP customer service centers and at selected authorized distributors, where paper single-ride tickets are currently sold. This means the option to pay for fares in cash will remain available.
 
If a passenger no longer needs the card, they can return it to a PMDP customer service center. Upon returning a functional card, the passenger will receive a refund of 20 CZK, and the card will be ready for further use.

 

More Benefits on Every Trip

The Pilsen Ticket offers a number of advantages over the current paper single-use tickets.
 
First and foremost, it allows passengers to purchase, for example, a 30-minute transfer ticket for the standard price of 24 CZK, while a paper non-transfer ticket costs 26 CZK. Passengers thus not only enjoy lower fares but also the ability to conveniently transfer between connections while the ticket is valid.
 
Another advantage is the boarding process itself. PMDP vehicles are equipped with more electronic validation devices than mechanical ticket validators for paper tickets. Passengers will therefore have more options for where to purchase their tickets, and the validation process will be faster and more convenient.
 
The main advantages of the Pilsen Ticket include:
  • lower single-trip fares compared to paper non-transfer tickets,
  • the ability to transfer with the purchased ticket,
  • the ability to reuse a single card,
  • easy credit top-ups via the Pilsen Card e-shop,
  • the option to return the card and receive a refund of the purchase fee 20 CZK.

Another Step Toward Modernizing the Fare Collection System

The introduction of the Pilsen Ticket is part of the long-term modernization of the PMDP ticketing system. This new product will gradually replace paper non-transferable tickets, whose use has declined significantly in recent years and which currently account for less than 10% of the total number of single-ride tickets sold.
 
At the same time, it will make it possible to reduce and gradually phase out the use of mechanical paper ticket validators on vehicles. These devices have been in operation for decades, and their maintenance and the procurement of replacement parts are becoming increasingly challenging. Modern electronic ticketing devices, on the other hand, offer greater reliability, simpler operation, and a wider range of applications.
 
Paper tickets remain on sale for now and are still valid. However, we plan to completely phase out their use by 31. 12. 2027. Passengers will be informed well in advance of the exact schedule for discontinuing their sale and use.
 
The Pilsen Ticket thus represents a modern and simple solution that preserves the option to pay fares in cash while also providing passengers with greater convenience when traveling on public transportation.
